Soapy Love

"What?!? You have an audition for that show?!? I LOVE THAT SHOW!"

"What show did she say? Oh! I LOVE THAT SHOW!"

Now I'm puzzled.

The audition was for a soap opera. My co-workers got so much more excited than when I'd booked "24" and other prime time television shows and this was just an audition. I didn't even know that my fellow co-workers watched soaps since I work with them during the day. Apparently they record them for watching later.

Why? What is it about soaps that hooks into a person so deeply that they go bonkers?

Is it that it tapes in video and not film so everything looks more real and not sleek and glossy?

Is it that the stories are about people that have been there for a long, long time so it's like you're following the lives of longtime friends?

Is it that it hooks in emotionally and pushes emotional buttons?

I watched soaps as a child with my mom growing up but it never enthralled me like a book did.

Maybe it's just me. I'm glad for the soap world. It means they have a rabid and strong fan base and they'll be going for a long, long time. And that means there will always be opportunities to work. And work is a plus in my book.
